There are several circumstances under which you may need to replace your watch band. You may have found the perfect watch, but are not thrilled with the color of the watch strap or the material from which it is constructed. You may also have inherited an old watch which is a beautiful timepiece, but which has a cracking leather band.

The selection of watch bands from which you can choose at your neighborhood jeweler's may be somewhat limited, depending on the design of the watch. However there are an abundance of online retailers, many of whom can supply top-quality watch bands for any design or size of watch. Some watches have an integrated band that cannot be replaced, while others are designed to provide you with a large degree of flexibility. If your watch was made with a leather, rubber, or cloth strap, you should be able to replace the watch band.

If your watch has a metal band, referred to as a "bracelet," you need to be much more precise when trying to order a replacement watch band. Cloth or leather bands are soft and flexible, so bands that are too large for the watch can sometimes be used without a problem. With metal watch bands, however, you must carefully measure the distance between the lugs on the watch face to ensure that the replacement watch band will fit.

Some companies have begun to give customers the option of switching from a cloth or leather watch strap to a metal watch bracelet. While some watch bands can be easily changed with a small screwdriver, other bands can only be replaced with specialized tools. This is most often the case with metal watch bands.
